Even Shorter Rant

Forums exist for the sake of allowing people to express themselves, freely and without limitations. If the forums degenerate into trollery, then this simply allows those who read them to achieve a clear and complete understanding of the human condition as it stands; it is vital to understand why so much of our society has statements like "lol stfu noob" on the brain, and any restriction of the ability for people to say things like that will only ensure that those who have an original thought to express may not have the opportunity to express it.

  1. But if a forum is filled with trolling and flaming, it restricts everyone else's ability to find the stuff they actually want to respond to, and may make them think it isn't worth responding to it in the sea of junk. Forum moderation thus does facilitate freedom of expression for most people.

  2. This is true, but it is a truth based on unfortunate exigencies of practicality, which I do not consider worthy of discussion. The right thing to do is to allow free expression; the realistic side effects of doing the right thing are non-ideal only because the world is non-ideal, and that fact should not stop us from behaving ideally.
